Slicer

Perhaps you started as a humble street doc, patching up injuries in makeshift clinics on the fringes of society. Or maybe you were a respected surgeon in The Settlement or employed by a powerful corporation, wielding a scalpel and advanced tech to save lives. In either case, circumstances led you away from your old life; whatever that reason, it was forceful enough to push you beyond familiar walls and into the broader world.

Now you’ve embraced the role of the Slicer, a mercenary doctor ready to practise medicine wherever it’s needed, no matter how dangerous the situation. Your knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and field triage is unrivalled, making you a welcome sight for anyone in dire straits. Whether you’re tending to wounded scavengers in dusty outposts or patching up bruised egos (and bodies) for corporate agents out on assignment, you bring vital expertise few can match. Everywhere you roam, your scalpel and steady hand stand between life and death, ensuring your skills are never wasted.

Tradecraft Descriptions

Xenobiology

Your academic pursuits have ventured beyond the familiar, delving into the complex field of xenobiology. This advanced study equips you with the unique ability to apply your medical knowledge to creatures of alien physiology, expanding your expertise to the myriad forms of life the multiverse presents. The term 'alien' encompasses all entities distinctly different from the known six (Human, Vaks, Tarrgg, Choque, F’Vasa, Neth) biological makeup. It's worth noting that the complexity of medical treatment varies significantly across species, influenced by the degree of physiological deviation from the known. The familiarity with the standard species as outlined in the rules means a Slicer is well-prepared for a diverse range of medical scenarios.

Note

Your GM will decide how hard it is to use medicine on an alien depending how different the species physiology is compared to your own.

Trade Secrets:

Nanobot Reconfiguration: With innovative adaptability, you have mastered the art of repurposing repair sprays, originally intended for inanimate objects, for organic tissue healing. This unique modification showcases your expertise at the intersection of technology and biology, offering new healing solutions and expanding the scope of emergency medical care.

Modifier: Allows the conversion of repair sprays for use on organic tissues, providing versatile healing options.

Nanobot Sensory Augmentation: Your advanced understanding of nanotechnology enables you to enhance human senses through nanobot configuration, such as providing night vision or extending hearing beyond normal human ranges. This leap in personal augmentation not only heralds new possibilities in human capability but also offers significant tactical advantages, allowing for superior performance in diverse and challenging environments.

Modifier: Allows the programming of nanobots for sensory enhancements, such as night vision.

Roll your Medicine skill check against a target number of 4, on a successful check the augmentation effect lasts 1 hour. Each critical success you achieve extends the duration by 1 hour.

Keen Mind

Medicine is your forte, a subject to which you've dedicated significant study. This allows you the ability to reroll one of your Medicine skill dice should you fail. You must take the second result, the reroll does not apply to the linked Trait. If your Trait roll succeeds but your skill rolls fail, you may still use this craft.

Trade Secrets:

Laser Focus: Take your medical precision to the next level. With years of study and practice behind you, your ability to concentrate under pressure is unmatched. When administering medical aid, your hands are steady and your mind is clear, enabling a double chance for success.

Modifier: You are allowed to reroll both failed Medicine skill dice.

Cyberscience: In the realm of cyberscience, you possess the capability to modify a range of cybernetic enhancements, including cybernetics, Neoware, and other internal medical enhancement technologies. These modifications can be applied regardless of whether the enhancements are currently implanted in an individual. The scope of modifications includes, but is not limited to, boosting the effectiveness of weapon systems, enhancing the power output of prosthetic limbs, and extending the operational lifespan of various implants.

Note

This process, however, is time-constrained, demanding several hours of focused work.

During a dedicated four-hour session, you employ your Neoscience skill, following the Rule of Four as per usual. Success in this endeavour results in the augmentation of one item. In the case of critical successes, you can choose to either enhance an additional item or grant the same item more 'charges.' The boosted item retains its augmented capabilities for a specific number of charges, which are expended upon usage.

Modifiers:

BoostMaxMats
+1 Skill (skill system)2
+4 Armour (Dermal Plating)1
+1 lvl duration2
+1 lvl of device1
+1 Internal Botshot Charge2
  • This only applies to equipment that affects a skill which the Greaser can boost i.e. Electronic lockpicks for Intrusion.

Handy With A Knife

Through years of meticulous practice and dedication, you've elevated the use of a scalpel to an exquisite art form. Your precision with this small blade is unmatched, allowing for incredibly delicate and accurate work. While you may not have combat training from your years dedicated to your trade, your adeptness with a scalpel permits you to utilise your Acumen (ACU) in place of Dexterity (DEX) for relevant skill checks — the choice is yours. This unique skill remains beneficial even if you decide to expand your horizons into Armed Combat.

Trade Secrets:

Knife Virtuoso: Harnessing your refined skills with small blades, you inflict an additional wound damage when employing a knife in your endeavours. This heightened damage reflects your exceptional ability to target and exploit vulnerabilities with precision.

Modifier: Provides +1 Wound damage with a knife.

Supple Wrists: Your wrists have gained remarkable flexibility and strength from your extensive practice with delicate tools, allowing you to throw knives further without penalty over distances. This ability represents not just a physical adaptation but a deeper understanding of weight distribution and aerodynamics.

Modifier: Double the throwing range of knives.

Well Respected

As a Slicer, your invaluable expertise in the medical field has garnered you respect and recognition across diverse societies. Your presence is universally esteemed, making you a cherished figure in almost every social circle; from the highest echelons of The Settlement to the murky realms of bandit-infested territories. Even those with nefarious intentions think twice before causing harm, recognising the potential benefits of your skills. This universal acknowledgment of your abilities opens doors to negotiations and exchanges, allowing you to leverage your medical prowess in various situations.

Trade Secrets:

Bedside Manner: Your demeanour and approach in social interactions are marked by a unique charm and confidence, honed through years of comforting and advising patients. This natural rapport grants you an advantage in social scenarios, making others more receptive and friendly towards you.

Modifier: Gain a +1 bonus to any social skill, or to trait rolls when no appropriate skill applies, during social situations.

Your Reputation Precedes: The mere mention of your name adds considerable weight to negotiations, especially when discussing remuneration for services rendered. Your reputation for reliability, skill, and integrity ensures that you, and by extension, your allies, are compensated more generously for your efforts. This enhanced stature is contingent upon the setting and the discretion of the GM.

Note

The GM may require you to roll during negotiations, even if you are not leading them. The success of this roll will influence the bonus received. This Trade Secret can be degraded by negative acts by the Slicer. If this happens, the Slicer would have to make efforts to regain their reputation.

Skilled Hands

You have refined your expertise in medicine to a remarkable degree. Your proficiency ensures that any successful Medicine skill check not only heals but does so with exceptional effectiveness, automatically granting 1 additional critical success. Furthermore, any critical success you naturally roll is counted as normal.

Trade Secrets:

General Practitioner: Your extensive experience and broad knowledge base in the field of general medicine allow you to approach a wide array of ailments with confidence. This expertise translates into a tangible improvement in your medical interventions, making your treatments more likely to succeed.

Modifier: Receive a +1 bonus to all Medicine skill rolls.

Surgeon General: Your skills have ascended to the pinnacle of surgical excellence, enabling you to confront and resolve even the most complex medical challenges. You possess the unique ability to cure any condition categorised as a 'minor injury', requiring nothing more than a Robot Medical Kit. This signifies a mastery over the medical field that few can claim.

Modifier: Capable of curing any minor injury with only the use of a Robot Medical Kit.

Cool Under Pressure

Your training as a Slicer equips you to remain composed in the most dire of circumstances. This exceptional calm allows you to perform at your peak even when faced with life-threatening scenarios. You are unshaken by the chaos of combat or other high-pressure situations, maintaining your skill levels without any penalties.

Trade Secrets:

Synergy: Your adeptness in coordinating with others stems from extensive teamwork during critical operations. This synergy not only enhances your performance but also elevates the group's effectiveness. When engaged in Group skill checks or Assisted Untrained skill checks, your calming influence and strategic insights contribute to a more harmonious and effective team dynamic.

Modifier: Everyone involved in a Group skill check or an Assisted Untrained skill check receives a +1 bonus.

Work With Aplomb: Your unruffled demeanour in the face of adversity allows you to navigate high-pressure situations with remarkable efficiency. This cool-headedness is not just a trait but a tactical advantage, enabling you to reduce any time penalties that would normally hinder progress in stressful scenarios. Your ability to stay composed directly translates into more efficient and effective actions under pressure.

Modifier: Ability to reduce time penalties in high-pressure situations based on a successful skill roll, using the appropriate skill for the context.
